Regina King was seconds away from her Emmy win Monday when the “universe” told her to get off her phone.
The “Seven Seconds” actress, who won the award for outstanding leading actress in a limited series or movie, said backstage she was reaching for her phone to “Google something” when her lipstick “popped out” and landed on her lap, leaving a mark on her gown.
“The universe was like, ‘Get off your damn phone,’” she joked.
King recalled looking for a stain remover when her agent, Dar Rollins, said, “Well, if you win, just bring your purse up to cover it up.”
King scoffed at the suggestion.
“I was like, ‘I’m not gonna win,’” she said.
When her name was announced as the winner, Rollins didn’t miss a beat, she said.
“He was saying to me, ‘I told you. I told you.’ And I was just like, ‘What the?’ I’m still, like, my heart is giggling,” she said.
Asked about diversity in the industry and beyond, she said her fears the country is “divided” right now had something to do with her belief she wouldn’t win her category.
“I think that probably played into a big part of my assumption that the chances of me winning were so small,” she said backstage.
She said this was a moment for her to “recognize” that sometimes she’s thinking in a box too.
“My peers don’t just have the same skin color as me and they’re not just only interested in what, the things that represent what they look like. They’re interested in art and storytelling, and they’re interested in seeing things from different perspectives,” she said. “And this an example of (that), of us thinking more globally and not thinking in a box.”
